Report: Russia to raise share of renewable sources in power to 4.5%

MOSCOW, Oct 13 (PRIME) -- Russia plans to raise the share of power generation running on renewable energy sources in its power balance to 4.5% in 2035 from the current 0.5%, Energy Minister Nikolai Shulginov said in an interview to Rossiya 24 television channel broadcast on Wednesday.

“We are now developing a strategy of low-carbon development, we have to take these trends into account. Our power balance is good now, hydropower and nuclear power generation account for about 40%,” Shulginov said.

“Regarding the renewable energy sources, I think that we will raise their share to 4.5% from 0.5% until 2035. The share of hydropower will remain the same, but consumption will grow, so the power output will rise.”

The share of nuclear power generation should also rise to 23%, he said.

After approving a 2035 low-carbon strategy, Russia will consider prolonging the strategy until 2050, he added.
